Peking University opens clinical research institute

Shanghai. June 23. INTERFAX-CHINA - Peking University, one of the top universities in China, announced on Friday the opening of its clinical research institute, which will form part of the university's health and science center.

The institute will conduct advanced research into theoretical problems presented in clinical trials, catalogue disease symptoms and methods of disease treatment, and appraise the efficacy of medical treatments. The university expects to be used as reference source in the formation of government health strategies and medical insurance polices.

"We are different from other clinical trial bases at other universities and research institutes as we aim to pay special attention to government-initiated projects and causes, on top of providing comprehensive services to clients," an official with the institute, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

The clinical research institute will organize high-level clinical research platforms to provide multi-centered clinical trials in China thanks to its deep pool of medical talent from the institute and Peking University, he added.

Aside from research and development, the institute will also serve as a teaching and training center and host international academic exchanges and forums.  The health and science center of Peking University conducts intern programs at 15 hospitals in Beijing Municipality, of which eight receive sponsorship and administrative affiliation.
