Decide when to give antibiotic prophylaxis for wounds and bites; Advise patient, including health care workers, about the probability of transmission of HIV and hepatitis B after exposure to body fluids or sexual exposure; Prescribe adequate postexposure prophylaxis for hepatitis B and HIV; Diagnose diseases caused by pets and other animals, and Educate patients about prevention of diseases caused by animals.

Consider the possibility of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in community acquired skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia, and sepsis, and administer empiric therapy when clinically indicated; Describe how the emergence and increasing frequency of community associated Clostridium difficile infections and associated disease will change the clinician’s practice; Cite recent data on the use of cold and cough medications in very young children; Explain potential challenges that would occur with a pandemic of influenza A virus subtypes H5N1, and describe the recommended steps for hospital preparedness; and Effectively screen for and identify infectious diseases in newly arrived immigrant and refugee populations.
