Egypt: Ismail Serageldin, one of Africa’s leading scientists, called for developed countries to commit 5% of their research and development budgets addressing problems of the poor at the BioVision Alexandria conference in Alexandria, Egypt, in April 2008. According to Serageldin, the world risks “scientific apartheid” between rich and poor countries unless research and technology is better used to benefit the poor. He cited the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and tobacco-related illness as one of the most critical issues.
