About the Speakers:

Dr. Valerie Murrah obtained her dental degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, her advanced training in oral and maxillofacial pathology at the University of Minnesota and her anatomic pathology training at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. She served on the faculty at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry from 1983-1987 where she was Director of the Oral Diagnosis and Emergency Clinics and the school's first Infection Control Committee Chair. In 1988, Dr. Murrah joined the Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In 1994, she moved to Atlanta and joined the Pathology Department at Emory University School of Medicine where she served as research director for the Division of Oral, Head and Neck Pathology. She is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences and General Dentistry at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with joint appointments in Pathology and Otolaryngology. She has received teaching awards from multiple universities. Her research focuses on tobacco and viral co-factors in oral carcinogenesis and aspects of gene therapy for oral cancer.

Mrs. Linda Stewart is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences and General Dentistry and is the Director of Patient Relations at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. She has been involved in Allied Dental Education for over 30 years, and currently serves as a consultant and staff representative for the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation.
Mrs. Stewart received her B.S. in Dental Auxiliary Teacher Education in 1973 and an M.A. in 1986 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mrs. Stewart has directed numerous continuing education seminars for the dental team at local, state and national levels and has published related articles in professional journals.
