GlobalMD conducted a ORT Training for Pediatricians at ShengJing Hospital, ShengYang, China

Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) for diarrhea was first developed in 1960’s in Bangladesh at the Int’l Center for Diarroeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDRB) and Calcutta, India with the participation of the Child Health Foundation(CHF) founders. During the past 40 years, this therapy has saved millions of lives in the developing world. More recent studies have demonstrated that ORT can be effectively applied in any country in the world. As part of its core mission of saving the maximum number of children’s lives at the lowest possible cost, GlobalMD and CHF have been jointly continually supporting innovative approaches to adapt ORT to health care and social situations globally.

ORT is "potentially the most important medical discovery of the 20th century"(The Lancet (1978)), and represents a cheap and effective way of reducing the millions of deaths caused each year by diarrhea. Unfortunately, China has not yet set up an ORT Center in either hospital or community health center, whereas, more than 70 percentages of the children outpatients are due to diarrhoeal problems. To replicate the valuable experiences of the ORT centers, a proposed ORCE with the comprehensive education programs for both healthcare workers and the public has been developed recently by GlobalMD.

Based upon the ORT Training Program recently organized by GlobalMD in China, measurable results were demonstrated, primarily because it addressed salient child health issues today’s China. Physician practices on Diarrhoeal disease there are still often undertaken with antibiotics or antivirus treatment via intravenous (IV) fluid replacement. Moreover, parents have less awareness of ORT with optimal ratio of glucose and electrolytes availability. Because of the successes of training program and awareness of these practices, we foresee potential benefit of the creation of an ORCE, which is introduced by Dr Tim Shi, Dr Julius Goepp and Dr Sun Mei in China.
