PROGRAM OVERVIEW & COURSE OBJECTIVES

There is increasing interest in ultrasound applications by chest clinicians. Ultrasound has proven to be of great aid in staging of lung cancer when used with bronchoscopes or GI endoscopes. Portable ultrasound devices are bringing ultrasound application to the clinic and the intensive care unit. This course will

serve as an introduction to thoracic ultrasound applications for pulmonologists. The course will employ lectures by experts and instructional video. A hands-on workshop will familiarize the participants with currently available ultrasound technology for use by pulmonologists.

At the completion of this course the attendees will:

1. Have an understanding of basic principles of ultrasound imaging;

2. Appreciate the use of transthoracic ultrasound imaging both in the clinic and at the bedside;

3. Recognize vascular structures in the chest with ultrasound;

4. Appreciate the role of EBUS in sampling mediastinal lymph nodes and staging lung cancer.
