Course Overview

Skin cancers are the most common type of cancer diagnosed in the United States today.

With this increased need, many patients seek consultation with their family practitioner when they

note a suspicious lesion or during regular check ups. To expedite the diagnosis and early intervention of

these skin cancers, it is essential that family practitioners and other primary care providers have the tools for diagnosis.

Course Objectives:

The goals of this course are to teach attendees the common clinical features of skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and malignant melanoma (MM), to give valuable hands-on experience in biopsy techniques through the use of a pig’s feet lab, and to educate on appropriate treatment plans based on the pathologic diagnosis obtained. Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

• Recognize the common clinical features of skin cancers including BCC, SCC and MM;

• Identify suspicious lesions in need of biopsy;

• Be adept at performing shave and punch biopsies;

• Formulate appropriate treatment plans based on the pathologic diagnosis obtained.
