New Technologies and Procedures

Franklin Square Hospital Center continues to keep up-to-date with the ever-changing healthcare world. Providing our patients with the newest research, technology and equipment assures that everyone will receive quality healthcare. The following is some of the newest procedures and tests available at Franklin Square .

CyberKnife
Franklin Square is the second hospital in the state to provide patients with this revolutionary technology. CyberKnife is designed to continuously track, detect and correct for tumor and patient movements throughout treatment. It is the next generation in radiosurgery that uses intelligent robotics to extend the benefits of traditional radiosurgery to the treatment of tumors anywhere in the body with sub-millimeter accuracy.

superDimension Bronchus
Franklin Square is one of eleven hospitals in the country that has the ability to perform a minimally invasive biopsy anywhere in the lungs. super Dimension Bronchus combines electromagnetic and virtual imaging technology to extend the reach of a traditional bronchoscope to biopsy smaller lesions deep in peripheral branches of the lungs, allowing for the diagnosis of lung cancer in its early stages. “super Dimension gives us critically-needed ammunition in the battle against lung cancer and helps us in increasing our patients’ chances for survival,” said William Krimsky, MD, interventional pulmonologist.

64-slice CT Scanner
This piece of equipment identifies conditions faster the ever before. In a matter of a few seconds, the 64-slice CT Scanner can produce a high resolution image of the heart, brain or lungs, allowing for a faster, more accurate diagnosis. “We’re identifying medical conditions at unprecedented speed,” said Blair Andrew, MD, chair of the Department of Imaging Services.

16-slice PET-CT
The addition of CT data to the PET allows shorter imaging times with increased comfort for the patients, as well as automatic co-registration of CT and PET information for more accurate results. “PET-CT is considered the most advanced imaging modality in staging and restaging many patients with cancer,” said Gabriel Soudry, MD, director of Nuclear Medicine.

Computer Assisted Navigation Surgery
This surgery is now available in the Joint Institute to improve accuracy in knee replacement surgery. The new technology acts as a GPS device to record the exact position of the knee and then helps direct the surgeon’s tools to perfect precision. The computer ensures that the bone cuts align the joint in the exact position that the surgeon is trying to achieve. “In the past we could only tell if the alignment was off by getting a postoperative X-ray. By that time, the only option was to reoperate,” said David Gold, MD, director of the Joint Institute. “The bottom line is that using a computer to assist in total knee replacement surgery can make a good surgeon even better and therefore likely improve the long term outcome for the patient.”
